PALM BEACH COUNTY, Fla (CBS12) — At the turn of the 20th century, there was an employment boom of unprecedented proportions in South Florida, the hiring of thousands of black laborers to extend Henry Flagler’s Florida East Coast Railroad. Historian and author Everee Jimerson Clarke says these laborers played a key role in the development of early Palm Beach and also helped to build the Royal Poinciana Hotel and Flagler’s Whitehall residence, which is, today, known as the Henry Flagler Museum.
