Newcastle’s most haunted road

Have you seen the ghost of Lemon Tree Passage Road?
For decades, lovers of the supernatural have said the popular Port Stephens road is one of the state’s most haunted.
Many have reported spotting a bright white light following their vehicles when driving along the 40km stretch.
While the cause has yet to be formally identified, rumours say the apparition is the ghost of a 20-year-old who tragically passed away in a motorcycle accident on Lemon Tree Passage Road.
Reports from the 2007 incident stated a man and his male passenger were riding along the stretch and collided with a four-wheel drive at Tanilba Bay in Port Stephens.
The passenger was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition, before passing away shortly after.
Legend says the man’s ghost can be seen if drivers are travelling in excess of 100km/h.
Word of the phenomenon hit a peak in the 2010s with several young motorists posting their speeding attempts online.
Port Stephens Police gained knowledge of the trend after one adrenaline junkie hit speeds of upwards 180km/h, according to a social media post.
Local authorities reported catching six speeding teenagers in one night, prompting increased surveillance of the area.
The incident gained vast media attention, prompting director David James Campbell to create a film on the urban legend.
